Who We Are
Mr. Cheng's Sound System isn't a single DJ — it's a collective. Two selectors with over 10+ years of experience playing weddings, events, and clubs, built around one vision: music curated with the kind of depth and intention that only comes from people who've spent their lives in it.
Gabe and Jabu are childhood friends who grew up together in Burlington, Vermont. The music came first — long before the decks. That shared history is in every set.
Bespoke means we build everything from scratch for you — your taste, your crowd, your arc. We meet with every couple, learn their music, and engineer a set that couldn't belong to anyone else.
We perform digital sets as standard, with vinyl available on request. Whatever the format, the approach is the same — every track chosen with intention, every transition earned.
On the name: A "sound system" in the Jamaican tradition — originating in the 1940s — was never just equipment. It was a collective: the operator, the selectors, the amplifiers, the community. The sound system was the party. We carry that idea forward — not as nostalgia, but as a philosophy. The music, the people behind it, and the room it creates are all one thing.
On being bespoke: Every client gets a dedicated consultation, an iterative playlist process, and a final set engineered around their event. We don't recycle sets. We don't have a standard playlist. What we build for you lives and dies with your night — and that's exactly how it should be.
